What are the eligibility requirements for the PhillyPLUS Residency?

Under the certification guidelines of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, candidates must have at least three years of experience in a certified, school-based role in order to be eligible for the PhillyPLUS Residency. You can learn more about Pennsylvania certification requirements here.

What is the residency tuition for the 2019-20 cohort?

Residency tuition and fees will be approximately $10,000 for the 2019-20 cohort. Payment plans are available that allow Residents to make monthly payments. Residents who pay full tuition before the start of the school year will receive a 5% discount, equaling $500.00.

Note: All of the above costs are based on the 2019-20 school year and are subject to annual increases.

Can I pay tuition with a Federal Student Loan?

Unfortunately, PhillyPLUS Residency tuition is not eligible for a Federal Student Loan. There are many options for personal loans. These are loans from banks or another source that have a fixed payment schedule and can be used to fund anything desired, including living costs, health care, or education costs. If you are interested in pursuing a loan to assist with tuition expenses, you must do so independently, as eligibility varies.

Are you currently accepting applications?

Our application for PhillyPLUS Residency is now available. The priority deadline to submit your application is March 1st, 2019. In the meantime, sign up for our mailing list to stay in touch.

Can I apply for the program if I’m already certified?

Yes. PhillyPLUS provides professional development and support that will benefit participants who have already completed traditional certification programs. We may also establish partnerships with some schools who prefer that Residents come in with their certification, so we will take this into consideration in the placement matching process.

Can I reapply for the current admissions year if my first application was rejected?

Candidates may only apply to PhillyPLUS once during an admissions year but are welcome to reapply during subsequent admissions years.

What are the dates for the 2019 summer institute?

Our 2019 summer institute is scheduled from June 26, 2019 through July 26, 2019. Residents accepted into the program are required to attend the summer institute in its entirety.

Will I be guaranteed a placement as a Resident for my training? Will I be guaranteed a placement as a principal following the program?

Placement is not guaranteed for PhillyPLUS Residents. After the training year, Residents will be responsible for securing an administrative position in a Philadelphia school. We do provide Residents with placement assistance, helping coordinate interviews with partner schools, and preparing you to be as successful as possible in the process.

How will I be matched to a placement school? Can I stay at the school where I currently work?

Program participants who currently work in a school that has agreed to host them as a Resident will be matched with their own school. Where possible, Residents will be matched with the type of school they prefer: charter, district, or independent/parochial. Whenever possible, PhillyPLUS will accommodate requests of host mentors and Residents to meet in advance of confirming final matches.

What can I expect from my mentor at my placement site?

Mentor principals commit to providing Residents with meaningful learning opportunities throughout the year, from managing a team of teachers to participating in IEP meetings and planning staff professional development. PhillyPLUS will provide mentor principals with training, as well as quarterly recommendations for responsibilities Residents should be asked to take on. PhillyPLUS coaches will communicate regularly with mentor principals to facilitate the most meaningful partnership possible.

How will my salary be covered?

You will be employed by your placement school and your salary will be covered by the budget of that school. At no time will Residents by employed by PhillyPLUS.
