Your Career

The PhillyPLUS Turnaround program helps experienced school leaders refine their skill set as they learn what it takes to lead a successful turnaround.

Where You’ll Train

Learn from leaders in other schools across the country.

As a PhillyPLUS Turnaround resident, you’ll spend your first year working as an assistant principal (or in a comparable role) in a Philadelphia turnaround school, where you’ll be responsible for managing and supporting teachers and overseeing academics and operations. Throughout the year, you’ll participate in four externships, leaving your home campus to learn from leaders in other schools within Philadelphia and across the country.

Where You’ll Work

During the first year of the program, PhillyPLUS Turnaround residents will work at one of Philadelphia’s highest-need charter or district schools. 

At the end of your first year, you’ll be evaluated to determine your readiness to lead a turnaround school. Residents who demonstrate their ability to transform student learning in a challenging environment will have the opportunity to lead a high-need school in Philadelphia. While residents are responsible for finding a placement in a turnaround school, PhillyPLUS staff will connect you with our school partners that could be a good fit.

Salary and Benefits

As a full-time employee, you will receive full benefits and the starting salary for a school leader in the school system that hires you.

Pennsylvania Certification

Graduates of the PhillyPLUS Turnaround program leave with the critical skills they need to transform student learning and effect change in a turnaround environment. By successfully completing the program, districts will know that you’re not just a school leader—you’re a school leader with a proven record of increasing student success in challenging environments. 

While an administrative certification is not required to be accepted, leadership experience is a prerequisite for acceptance into the program. Accepted applicants without an administrative certification will be supported in earning certification on a case-by-case basis.

Support After Graduation

During your second year, you’ll continue to receive support from a mentor principal and a leadership coach as needed. You’ll also have the opportunity to mentor incoming PhillyPLUS Turnaround residents.
