What are the eligibility requirements for the PhillyPLUS Residency?

Under the certification guidelines of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, candidates must have at least three years of experience in a certified, school-based role in order to be eligible for the PhillyPLUS Residency. You can learn more about Pennsylvania certification requirements here.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PhillyPLUS Turnaround program?

PhillyPLUS Turnaround applicants must have school leadership experience. An administrative certification is not required, but experience leading teaching teams is a prerequisite. Accepted applicants without an administrative certification will be supported in earning certification on a case-by-case basis.

Are you currently accepting applications?

Our application for PhillyPLUS Residency and Turnaround is now closed. We will resume selection for the 2018-2019 school year in the spring of 2018. In the meantime, sign up for our mailing list to stay in touch.

Can I apply for the program if I’m already certified?

Yes. PhillyPLUS provides professional development and support that will benefit participants who have already completed traditional certification programs. We may also establish partnerships with some schools who prefer that residents come in with their certification, so we will take this into consideration in the placement matching process. If you are interested in serving as a principal in a turnaround school, you may want to consider our specialized track, PhillyPLUS Turnaround.

Can I reapply for the current admissions year if my first application was rejected?

Candidates may only apply to PhillyPLUS once during an admissions year, but are welcome to reapply during subsequent admissions years.

What are the dates for the 2017 summer institute?

Our 2017 summer institute is scheduled from June 28, 2017 through July 28, 2017. Residents accepted into the program are required to attend the summer institute in its entirety.

Will I be guaranteed a placement as a resident for my training? Will I be guaranteed a placement as a principal following the program?

Placement is not guaranteed for PhillyPLUS residents. After the training year, residents will be responsible for securing an administrative position in a Philadelphia school. We do provide residents with placement assistance, helping coordinate interviews with partner schools and preparing you to be as successful as possible in the process.

PhillyPLUS Turnaround leaders will be evaluated on their readiness to lead a turnaround school at the end of their first training year. If you demonstrate an ability to transform student learning in a challenging environment, you’ll have the opportunity to lead a high-need school in Philadelphia. While placement is not guaranteed—you will be responsible for finding a placement in a turnaround school—PhillyPLUS staff will connect you with schools that could be a good fit.

How will I be matched to a placement school? Can I stay at the school where I currently work?

Program participants who currently work in a school that has agreed to host them as a resident will be matched with their own school. Where possible, residents will be matched with the type of school they prefer: charter, district, or independent/parochial. Whenever possible, PhillyPLUS will accommodate requests of host mentors and residents to meet in advance of confirming final matches.

What can I expect from my mentor at my placement site?

Mentors commit to providing residents with meaningful learning opportunities throughout the year, from managing a team of teachers to participating in IEP meetings and staff professional development. PhillyPLUS will provide mentors with training, as well as quarterly recommendations for responsibilities residents should be asked to take on. PhillyPLUS coaches will communicate regularly with mentors to facilitate the most meaningful partnership possible.

How will my salary be covered?

You will be employed by your placement school and your salary will be covered by the budget of that school. At no time will residents by employed by PhillyPLUS.
